Cafés closure sends youths in droves to illegal racing, stunts

Security operatives, including officers from the Public Security Department, Traffic Department and Rescue Operations Department, on Friday carried out an intensive security campaign along Wafra Road, resulting in the arrest of 21 youths who were performing stunts with their cars, confiscation of 47 sports cars, and issuance of 120 citations.

Under the leadership of acting Assistant Undersecretary for Public Security Affairs Brigadier Abdul Fatah Al-Ali and in compliance with the directives of Major Generals Mahmoud Al-Dousari and Khalil Al-Shemali, the officers carried out the operation. About 500 youths were gathered along the road after the closure of café joints. They barricaded the road and performed stunts with their cars. Some passersby, who were not comfortable with this behavior, called police, so about 40 police cars were drafted to handle the situation. Some of the youths fled the scene with their cars immediately after sensing police presence, but the securitymen recorded the plate numbers of few cars. This road is known to have witnessed several serious traffic accidents over the last few months.

In a related story, security officers affiliated to Jahra Command, in compliance with the directive of Command Security Chief Brigadier Ayed Al-Otaibi, clamped down on several youths who were engaged in a similar activity. The officers seized seven cars and arrested four persons wanted by law for various charges, in addition to 24 others for failure to present valid identification documents and an international call center operator. The officers referred all the arrested persons to the authorities for prosecution.
